Oswego Tourney
Jan 1 -
Guilderland traveled to
Section III and delivered an impressive performance against some of
the top programs in New York State. The Dutchmen finished 5th
out of 23 teams, despite bringing only 10 wrestlers. Senior
captain Devan Van Auken was voted the recipient of the Dutchmen
Award by his peers by capturing the title at 215 pounds. Van
Auken scored a 6-2 finals victory over DJ Ingham of Fulton.
Ingham is the defending Section III 215 champion and a 2008 State
Place finisher. Congratulations, Devan.
Fellow captain Matt Cubillos also had a dominant performance in
capturing the 130 pound title in another difficult weight class.
Cubillos scored a 5-3 win over Lowville's Aaron Ingersoll, who was previously
undefeated. Ingersoll, formerly 20-0, had given up only 2
points this entire season.
Matt Hart was handed his first loss of the season in the 135 lb
semi-finals, but rebounded with an 11-3 major decision in the
consolation finals to place 3rd. Kevin Bates went 4-1 to take
3rd at 112 lbs.
Freshman Zach Wacksman and Junior Eugene Sellie placed 5th, while
Greg Reinhart took 6th. Brendan Ruddy placed 8th, and Ben Moon
and Travis Wolanski contributed to the team score during the event.
Wolanski was unable to finish when he was injured early in the
tournament, and was likely to place. This was truly a team
effort; the exceptional work ethic in the practice room is beginning
to show, and all wrestlers should be commended for a great
performance.
