Lee Van Slyke Memorial

Guilderland struggled to
field a full lineup heading into the Lee Van Slyke Tournament on
Saturday. In recent years the Dutchmen have had success at the
annual event, including taking home team championships.
Despite the incomplete roster, the varsity members battled to 3rd
place, behind full squads from the host team Burnt Hills and Section
XI's Longwood High.
4 of the 10 entered competitors reached the finals, including two
champions in Seniors Matt Cubillos and Matt Hart. Cubillos
dominated the 135 lb weight class, finishing off the day with a
pinfall against his Longwood opponent. Hart claimed his first
tournament title and the Dutchmen Award with a finals win at 140
lbs. He retained his # 1 seed and perfect record of
11 - 0.
Juniors Travis Wolanski and Eugene Sellie reached the finals of
their respective weight classes of 119 and 160, but were defeated in
their last matches by quality opponents. All of the 10
Guilderland wrestlers finished in the top 6 of their weight classes;
however, most finished the day with the intent of better
performances still to come.
