dutchmen award
The "Dutchmen Award" was reinstituted for the
2007 - 2008 season, and will now be featured online for all fans and
wrestlers to see. The award serves to recognize the individual
who most clearly displays qualities that go beyond what is expected
for each match and tournament. This can be achieved by showing
exemplary performance, making a major contribution to the team,
overcoming adversity, or through substantial improvement.
Jan 24 - Essex Junction Tournament
Matt Cubillos picked up his
third Dutchmen Award of the season after a major win at the Essex
Junction Tournament in Vermont. Seeded #2 for the first time
this year, Cubillos faced Essex Junction's Jordan Gray, a defending
New England States Champion, and nationally ranked competitor.
In what many expected to be a close match, Cubillos stunned the home
crowd late in the second period when he threw Gray and secured a win
by fall. Congratulations also go out to Devan Van Auken, 215
lb champion, and Eugene Sellie, 160 lb champion.

Jan 20 - Ballston Spa Dual Meet
Senior Greg Reinhart gutted
out a crucial 145 lb matchup, earning pride points and team points
in a match that secured a win for the Dutchmen.
Despite being taken down twice in the first period, Reinhart climbed
back and scored the deciding points with a takedown of his own in
the third period to secure a win for himself and the team. The
win boosted Guilderland's Suburban Council record to 6-2.
Jan 14 - Columbia Dual Meet
Juniors Matt
Miller and Ben Moon both received the D.A. following crucial swing
matches against Columbia. While neither wrestler had his hand
raised after their matches, they were major contributors to the
greater team win. Both Varsity members faced higher ranked
opponents but gave up only narrow losses to help the team pick up an
important victory over a Suburban Council rival.
Jan 10 - Bradshaw Memorial
Tournament, Canandaigua
Matt Cubillos
picked up the first back-to-back Dutchmen Awards of the season after
a dominating performance at the Bradshaw Memorial Tournament.
Cubillos won all four of his matches by first period pinfall and
captured the "aggregate falls" award for most pins in the shortest
amount of time. It should be noted that Devan Van Auken, Matt
Hart and Brendan Ruddy also put up award-worthy performances; all
four wrestlers should be commended for their hard work in the face
of outstanding competition.
Jan 6 - Niskayuna Dual Meet
Returning State
Place Winner Matt Cubillos picked up his first Dutchmen Award with a
first period pinfall victory against Niskayuna. Cubillos has
been the favored wrestler in practically all of his matches this
season, and is working towards capturing Guilderland's first state
title in nearly 30 years.
Dec 30 - Ken Haines Memorial
Tournament, SUNY Oswego
Senior captain
Devan Van Auken captured the 215 lb title at the Ken Haines Memorial
Tournament, by defeating 2008 Section III champ and State
Placefinisher DJ Ingham of Fulton, 6-2. Van Auken went 4-0
with 2 pins and a major decision and is establishing himself as a
state contender heading into the second half of the season.
Dec 20 - Lee Van Slyke Tournament -
Matt Hart 140 lbs
Senior Matt
Hart was the 140 lb champion at the Lee Van Slyke Memorial
Tournament, taking home his first varsity tournament title. Hart
entered the tournament undefeated as the # 1 seed, and finished in
the same position. Hart now stands at 11 - 0 on the season,
and is the last remaining Dutchman without a loss.
Dec 18 - Averill Park Dual Meet -
Kevin Bates 112 lbs
Sophomore Kevin
Bates scored an impressive, but not surprising, win over defending
Section II Champ Jeff King Thursday night. Bates has been
honing his "grinder" style of wrestling, making things difficult for
many veteran opponents. Bates jumped to a 6 -2 lead at the end
of the first period, and neutralized King's strength as a top
wrestler with smart reversals. He held on to win the match 10
-4.
Dec 16 - Burnt Hills Dual meet -
Chris Halloran 125 lbs
Christian Kernozek 140 LBS
The first ever
"Co-Dutchmen Award" was given following the Burnt Hills dual meet.
On a night when several veterans fell short, varsity newcomers Chris
Halloran and Christian Kernozek stepped up to earn wins.
Halloran defeated his opponent 7 -3, while Kernozek held on for a 5
- 3 victory. Both wrestlers proved themselves capable at the
varsity level whenever they are needed.
Dec 13 - Duanesburg Duals -
Travis Wolanski 119 lbs
Several
Guilderland wrestlers won all of their matches at the Duanesburg
Duals on Saturday, including junior Travis Wolanski, who went 4 - 0.
Travis scored three falls and an 11 -2 major decision against
quality opponents. He did not give up a single offensive point
during the day, and remains undefeated for this season.
Dec 10 - Saratoga Dual Meet -
Matt Hart 140 lbs
Senior Matt
Hart picked up a crucial win at 140 lbs to tie the dual meet at the
mid-way point of the dual meet. Down 1-0 in the third period,
Matt scored a reversal to take a 1 point lead, and held on to win
the match against an opponent who defeated him the previous season.
The Dutchmen would go on to win the match, 44 - 30.
Dec 3 - Colonie Dual Meet -
Zach Wacksman 103 lbs
Zach Wacksman, the lone
Freshman on this year's Varsity squad, pinned Colonie's Lisa Anson,
who placed 5th in last year's Section II tournament. It was
Wacksman's first ever high school match, and was a crucial victory
in the Dutchmen's 46-39 victory over the Garnet Raiders, one of the
toughest teams in the Suburban Council South division.
Congratulations, Zach.
