Dutchmen Win
Dec 3
-
Guilderland won its first
Varsity match of the season in front a nearly-packed home audience
against Suburban Council rival, Colonie. The Dutchmen got
pin-fall victories from Eugene Sellie, Zach Wacksman, Kevin Bates
and Senior Captain Matt Cubillos. Travis Wolanski, Matt Hart,
Brendan Ruddy and Devan Van Auken also contributed with decision
victories.
The dual meet began at the 140 pound weight class, with
a major decision victory from Senior Matt Hart. A double
forfeit at 145 was followed by a win by fall for Colonie's Eliah
Golding, a Section II finalist in 2008. Colonie scored another
fall at 160. Eugene Sellie got the first pin of the
season for the Dutchmen at 171 lbs, after being bumped up from his
normal weight class of 160. Seniors Brendan Ruddy and Devan
Van Auken tallied decision wins to put Guilderland ahead in the team
score after the 275 pound weight class. (At the beginning of
each dual meet, a weight class is randomly drawn to determine the
match starting point. After the 275 pound class, the meet
continues in weight order from 96 lbs.)
A forfeit at 96 lbs put Colonie back in the team score
lead. At 103 lbs, Guilderland's lone Freshman starter, Zach
Wacksman, scored a pinfall over Lisa Anson, who placed 5th at the
Section II tournament last season. It was Wacksman's first
ever Varsity (or high school) match, and earned him the first
DUTCHMEN AWARD of the season! Kevin Bates scored a fall at 112
lbs and was followed by Travis Wolanski's third period win at 119.
Colonie picked up a couple of well-earned wins at 125 and 130 over
returning Varsity wrestlers. Senior Matt Cubillos concluded
the dual meet with a 1st period fall at 135 pounds, giving the
Dutchmen a 46-39 win over a tough Colonie team.
Congratulations to all wrestlers and thanks to all
those who attended! Please encourage friends and family to
attend, especially at home matches! The next dual meet will be held
at Saratoga on Wednesday, December 10th. The next home meet
will be on December 23rd against Mohonasen.
